Accessibility-conscious design means designing so that as many students as possible can participate fully — regardless of how they access content or what challenges they face.
Students can read lesson content, hear it read aloud with text-to-speech, click concept cards to hear them narrated individually, and use the Badgie Tutor for guided learning support. No single modality is required to participate.
All quiz questions can be answered using keyboard navigation (Tab to focus, Enter or Space to select). Voice controls, tap-to-hear concept cards, and mobile-accessible touch targets support diverse interaction methods.
Concepts are explained through Badgie's speech bubbles (narrative), concept grids (visual), analogies (contextual), and checkpoints (applied). Each format reinforces the same content in a different way.
The platform uses a high-contrast navy, orange, and green palette designed to be distinguishable across common forms of color vision differences. Text sizes are set at readable defaults and scale with browser settings.
Students are never locked out of completed content. Wrong answers do not result in penalties or content removal. Students can replay any module, review any lesson, and use the Badgie Tutor anytime. Learning is supported, not gatekept.
Modules are self-paced. There are no timed sections, no countdown timers, and no automatic advance. Students with processing speed differences, reading challenges, or anxiety around timed tests are not disadvantaged.
Every design decision in Badgie Academy is evaluated against a simple question: does this support student learning, or does it create a barrier?
Badgie Tutor is a guided learning helper with pre-written responses. It is not live AI and makes no external network calls.
The following accessibility features are present today. Status reflects our Phase 15 implementation. Continuous improvement means this list grows over time.
All student module lessons are narrated using the browser's Web Speech API. Students can have any lesson read aloud, paused, stopped, or set to auto-play. Mute preference is saved locally.
LiveStudents can tap or click individual concept cards and analogy boxes to hear them read aloud. A visible speaking indicator shows which card is currently being read.

Audio is never required and is always opt-in. Students control all TTS narration and can mute at any time. The mute preference is saved locally so it persists across sessions. No audio plays without the student or teacher initiating it.
Wrong answers are treated as learning opportunities, not failures. Badgie says: "Good try — this is how learning sticks." The platform always shows why the correct answer is right and why the selected answer was not the best fit — with no shame-based language.
The Badgie Tutor is not live AI. It uses pre-written responses stored in a local JavaScript file with no external network connections. No student data is sent to any AI service. The tutor identifies itself clearly as a "guided learning helper, not live AI advice."

TTS narration supports pre-readers when facilitated by an adult. Modules for K-2 are best implemented with teacher or parent support who can read content together with the student. A simplified K-2 experience is recommended for a future production version.

Formal screen reader testing with NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), and VoiceOver (macOS/iOS) has not been completed for the current MVP. ARIA labels and live regions are present, but compatibility with all screen reader/browser combinations is not confirmed.
A formal automated WCAG 2.1 AA scan has not been completed for this release. Phase 15 implements accessibility-conscious improvements, but does not guarantee passing all WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria.
The current module reading level is targeted at Grade 4+ with TTS support. A dedicated simplified K-2 experience with larger text, simpler navigation, and picture-supported content is recommended for a future version.
A dedicated high-contrast mode or theme toggle is not yet implemented. Students who require a high-contrast display should use their operating system's built-in high-contrast accessibility mode, which may override the platform's default colors.
